The Community Action & Leadership Award - building skills and confidence through accredited learning for disabled people, facilitated by Emma Whitelock of LEAD Scotland

Workshops were run by the joint conference partners.  All workshops ran in the morning and thenwere  repeated in the afternoon to allow our delegates to attend 2 different workshops.

Evidence shows that many disabled people want to develop the skills and confidence they need to better engage with service providers, and to enable them to have a say in local decision-making processes. Lead Scotland responded by creating an SCQF accredited competency based award, which has now been successfully delivered to 90 disabled learners across 4 areas of Scotland.

This workshop showcased the award content, project and personal approaches and outcomes, and explored the scope for replicating this model in other contexts, and with different client groups.

This interactive workshop looked at the myths around Dyslexia and the difficulties typically faced by Dyslexic Adults. Through understanding these, we can consider the range of approaches that should be used to create positive learning experiences that enable everyone to reach their potential.

A recent joint Knowledge Transfer Project between WEA Scotland and Aberdeen University made successful use of MOOCs to provide development opportunities for people working in CLD. This workshop shared experiences and considered opportunities for using MOOCs to support empowerment, participation, inclusion and self determination in adult learning communities.

Health Issues in the Community - a community development approach to health that leads to positive change, facilitated by the Scottish Community Development Centre and led by Peter McNally (North Lanarkshire Council) and Andy Howard (North Lanarkshire Young Carers)

This workshop focused on the practical outcomes of Health Issues in the Community - a course that encourages people to take part in discussions about their health, their communities, and how to bring about long term change. Facilitated by a tutor and a course participant the workshop gave a brief overview of the course, and explored, using real life examples, how a community development approach can lead to positive change both for participants, and in the way services are delivered.
